Orangewood is a safe haven for youth who have unwillingly found themselves in very unfortunate circumstances and need short-term protection. Each year hundreds of children, ranging from newborn to 18 years of age are brought here to Orangewood for reasons from alleged abuse, to neglect and abandonment. OCFC volunteers provide that individual attention that all children need. A five-year-old child needs a caring adult to play with her, read a story and admire her smile. An elementary-school-age child needs someone to help with homework assignments and projects. An awkward 12-year-old needs a special person to listen to him and compliment his budding social skills. Even a teenager, who may feel that she knows it all and needs no one, can gain from the personal connection with a caring volunteer.
The newest member of the board, Steiner asked the county finance director to draft a letter to Citron in 1994 questioning his “allegedly risky, exotic investments.” That letter was drafted — and promptly leaked to Citron. La Casa is committed to making special memories for the children while they're residing at Orangewood. Through La Casa's activities, these children are able to forget their troubled past, if even for just a few hours. The activities also allow the children to enjoy the simple pleasures of being a child.
